Cinema build-out

Basement Home Theatres & Cinema Rooms

A basement is the natural home for a cinema room — dark, quiet, and away from the rest of the house. RenoNext builds dedicated home theatres across Toronto and the GTA: proper acoustics, clean in-wall AV wiring, light control, and comfortable tiered seating.

Why a basement is right for a home theatre

The hardest parts of a home cinema — controlling ambient light and isolating sound — are exactly what a basement gives you for free. With few or no windows, you can achieve true blackout, and the surrounding concrete already blocks much of the sound from reaching the rest of the house.

A great room is more than a big screen. It needs wiring planned before the drywall goes up, acoustics that keep dialogue clear and bass tight, seating that lets every row see, and lighting you can dim to nothing. We design the room around the screen size and seating you want, then build it so the technology disappears into the walls.

What makes it work

What goes into a home theatre

The details that separate a room that works from one that disappoints.

Light control

A basement’s lack of windows makes true blackout easy — the biggest factor in picture quality. We finish walls and ceiling in low-reflectance tones so the image pops.

Pre-wiring

HDMI, network, speaker and power runs are planned and installed in-wall before drywall, with conduit for future upgrades — no visible cables, no surprises later.

Acoustics

Absorption panels, bass traps and a little diffusion keep dialogue clear and bass tight, while soundproofing keeps the movie out of the bedrooms above.

Tiered seating

A raised rear riser gives the back row a clear sightline to the screen and turns a media space into a real theatre.

Scene lighting

Dimmable, zoned lighting plus floor-level step lights let you go from bright to blackout and find your seat safely mid-film.

Screen & throw

We size the screen to the seating distance and confirm projector throw and mount height against your ceiling so the geometry actually works.

What it costs

Home Theatre build-out cost

Typical specialty build-out
$5,000–$25,000

Covers the theatre-specific scope — acoustics, AV wiring and mounts, lighting control, and a seating riser — on top of finishing the basement room. Equipment (projector, screen, speakers, seating) is separate and to your budget.

This is the specialty scope on top of finishing the room itself. For base finishing prices, see basement renovation cost.

What moves the price

Acoustic treatment
Absorption, diffusion and bass traps for a dedicated room cost more than a casual media space.
AV infrastructure
In-wall conduit, HDMI/network runs, speaker pre-wire and dedicated circuits add up with the number of components.
Seating riser
A raised second row so everyone can see the screen is carpentry that scales with room size.
Lighting & control
Dimmable scene lighting, step lights and blackout finishing raise the cost above basic fixtures.

How we build it

The build process

  1. 1

    Design around the screen

We start from the screen size and number of seats you want and lay out the room — viewing distance, riser, speaker placement and lighting — before any building begins.

  2. 2

    Confirm a dry base

The basement is verified waterproofed and dry, because a theatre packs in electronics and absorptive materials that do not mix with moisture.

  3. 3

    Frame & pre-wire

Walls, ceiling and the seating riser are framed, then all AV, speaker, network and power runs go in-wall with conduit while everything is open.

  4. 4

    Soundproof & insulate

Sound isolation and insulation go in so the movie stays in the room, followed by drywall.

  5. 5

    Acoustics & lighting

Absorption panels, bass traps and diffusers are placed for the room, and the dimmable scene lighting and step lights are wired and finished.

  6. 6

    Mount & hand over

Screen/projector mounts and blocking are set, seating goes in, and we walk the finished room with you ready for your equipment.

FAQ

Common questions

How much does a basement home theatre cost in Toronto?

The theatre-specific build-out — acoustics, in-wall AV wiring, a seating riser and lighting control — typically runs $5,000–$25,000 on top of finishing the basement room. Equipment such as the projector, screen, speakers and seating is separate and scales with the gear you choose. We provide a fixed quote after designing the room with you.

Why is a basement good for a home theatre?

Two reasons: light and sound. A basement usually has few or no windows, so you can achieve the true blackout that makes a projected image look its best, and the surrounding concrete naturally blocks much of the sound from reaching the rest of the house. Both are expensive to engineer in an above-grade room and largely free below grade.

Do you need a certain ceiling height for a basement cinema?

Around 7–9 feet of finished height works well. You need enough room for the screen, a tiered rear riser, and a clear projector throw over the front row’s heads. We measure your existing height and ductwork first and design the riser and mount to fit; low spots can sometimes be addressed during the project.

Should the AV wiring be done before drywall?

Yes — that is the whole advantage of building it properly. Running HDMI, network, speaker and power in-wall (with spare conduit) before the drywall goes up means no visible cables, a clean finish, and an easy path to upgrade equipment later without opening walls.

Can the theatre double as a family media room?

Absolutely, and many clients want exactly that. We can balance the acoustics and lighting so the room works for both serious movie nights and casual TV, and plan seating and layout for everyday use as well as a true cinema experience.
