Attic Insulation
The attic is where most homes lose the most heat — and where the best return on an insulation dollar lives.

Ice building up on the roof and big icicles at the eaves are not a roof problem — they are a heat-loss problem.
Insulation is one of three jobs
Do all three and you fix comfort, energy bills and ice dams at once. Skip one and you trade one problem for another.
1. Air seal
Stop warm, moist air leaking out through ceiling and wall gaps. Insulation does not seal air — this step comes first.
2. Insulate
Slow the heat that moves through materials by reaching the right R-value — R-50 to R-60 in the attic.
3. Ventilate
Keep the attic cold and dry with soffit-to-ridge airflow so moisture and heat exhaust instead of building up.
Common questions
Where should I insulate first?
For most Toronto-area homes the attic gives the best return — it is where the most heat escapes and the easiest place to add insulation and air sealing. Walls come next, especially in older homes built with little or none. If you have ice dams on the roof, the attic is also the fix, since ice dams are a heat-loss problem.
Why do icicles and ice build up on my roof?
That is an ice dam, and it is caused by heat escaping into the attic — it melts snow on the roof, which refreezes at the cold eaves and backs up under the shingles.
