How it works

Walls are a bigger share of the heated surface of a house than people expect, and in homes built before modern codes they are often barely insulated. The result is cold interior surfaces, drafts, uneven temperatures between rooms, and condensation where warm air meets a cold wall.

Unlike an attic, you cannot just add depth — the cavity is closed. So the method matters. We match the right approach to your house and your renovation plans: filling existing cavities without opening the walls, insulating from the inside when drywall is already coming off, or adding continuous insulation on the outside during new siding.

Drill-and-fill (dense-pack)

For closed walls with empty or under-filled cavities, we drill small holes and dense-pack insulation in, then patch — insulating without removing your interior finishes. The least disruptive option when it suits the wall.

Interior retrofit

When drywall is already coming off for a renovation, we insulate from the inside with batts or spray foam and a proper vapour barrier — the chance to do it thoroughly while the wall is open.

Exterior continuous insulation

During a re-siding, rigid continuous insulation on the outside wraps the house in an unbroken layer that also cuts thermal bridging through the studs — the highest-performance retrofit.

Vapour barrier & moisture

Wall assemblies have to dry. We place the vapour control correctly for the method and our climate so insulating the wall does not trap moisture inside it.

Rim joist & basement walls

The rim joist and basement walls are major, often-missed leak and heat-loss points. Insulating and air-sealing them is frequently the best-value part of a wall project.

Thermal bridging

Studs conduct heat straight through a wall. Continuous exterior insulation or careful detailing reduces these cold paths so the whole wall performs, not just the cavities.

Can you insulate walls without removing the drywall?

Often yes. For closed walls with empty cavities we use drill-and-fill: small holes are drilled, insulation is dense-packed into the cavity, and the holes are patched. It insulates the wall without gutting your interior finishes. Whether it suits your home depends on the wall construction, which we confirm during the assessment.

How much does wall insulation cost in Toronto?

Will insulating my walls cause moisture problems?

Not when the assembly is detailed to dry. The risk comes from putting a vapour barrier in the wrong place or trapping moisture in the cavity. We place vapour control correctly for the chosen method and our climate, and air-seal properly, so the wall stays dry while it performs.

Is the basement rim joist worth insulating?

Almost always — it is one of the best-value parts of a wall project. The rim joist (where the floor framing sits on the foundation) is a major, often-overlooked source of drafts and heat loss. Air sealing and insulating it usually delivers a noticeable comfort improvement for a modest cost.
